Details: Whale Season was close, and some Orcas had been popping up along the coast. So with the flat conditions and low wind i couldnt resist going for a spin from the Ocean Grove boat ramp down towards Port Phillip Heads, to see what might rear its head from the water. No luck today, so i dropped in on “The Rooms” to see if any Port Jackson Sharks were around. No luck with those either, but you have to be in it to win it!

Details: This dive was at a different part of the Labyrinth..some structure to the west of the main area i usually dive. Not a heap around, but there were some really interesting deeper water sponges in this area. The purple hue in the first photo has to be seen to be believed…i think it would look great under UV on a night dive.

Details: With choppy conditions on the surface, i decided to not take the boat too far away from the mouth of the Barwon. I decided on a random site off Collendia in about 14m of water. It was ok, but nothing to write home about. The usual suspects, Horseshoe Leatherjacket, Moonlighters, Magpie Perch and a Blue-lined Leatherjacket that always seems to pop up around these parts.

Details: One the way back from The Pinnacles, i popped into The Rooms to see if any Port Jackson Sharks or Wobbegongs were home. They must have been out and about today, so i only made this a short dive. A catshark was a good consolation, but it wasn’t a very photogenic one.

Details: In howling northerlies i looked for a site close to shore and choose an area that had schools of bait fish jumping out of the water. Underneath the vis was very cloudy and lots of surge. The structure also wasn’t very interesting, so all up this was a bit of a nothing of a dive. There were schools of salmon and bait fish on the ascent, but generally an uninteresting dive.

Details: This was a site a bit west and north of the normal Labyrinth dive site. Once dropping in Phil, Deb and myself came straight across a very welcoming Cuttlefish. It became fixated with my gauges and followed me around allowing for some close up photos…as did Phil. We got a bit lost towards the end of the dive, but ended up surfacing right next to the boat.

Details: On the way back to Barwon Heads after a great dive at the Pinnacles, i decided to check out whether “The Rooms” still contained some Port Jackson Sharks, which appeared to be residents of the area. Out of the whole coastline, some hooker divers just happened to be setup right next to The Rooms. I felt a bit awkward anchoring so close to them, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. So straight into Room 1 and sure enough a couple of jackos under the ledges. Not as many as last time, but still nice to know they are around. One gave me a nice big smile and showed off its killer teeth. A few blue devils were around as well…one was fascinated by my bubbles which hung trapped underneath a ledge. The vis was fairly murky, which was a bit of a surprise since it wasn’t all that far from The Pinnacles which had 15m+.

Details: This was a section of Magi Reef to the East that i hadn’t dived before. The terrain was spectacular with large bommies scattered over the area with lovely water clarity. It was hard to know wher eto go an explore, so many legdes and swim throughs etc. Although we didnt get any good critter encounter there was something magical about this dive. The water column was filled with jellies and plenty of fish life around too.

Details: Nothing is guaranteed with wildlife, but i had a strong feeling that the Port Jacksons would still be at “The Rooms” again today. I told Chris i had a Port Jackson site all lined up to dive, and i’m not sure he believed me. So after swimming about 10 metres and dropping straight into a hole full of 20+ Port Jackos, i could see the surprise and excitement through his mask. There was even a large Wobbegong sitting at the end of the hole. After 50-60 minutes of snapping away with the sharks, we explored some of the other ‘rooms’ in the area. The reef is really great around here…lots of fish with beautiful algea beds, and then shallow swim throughs and overhangs all inhabiting a blue devil, a cuttlefish or a crayfish.
A great dive, in great conditions.

Details: Have a few bar left in my tank i decided to check out another shallow site a bit closer to shore. The area was sounding up great with big drops in the shallow reef from 5-10m frequently. I jumped in and was soon onto a big grotto of Port Jackson Sharks. I couldn’t stick around for long due to little air, but it was great to finally see a large group of Jackos again.

The hole was full of old wives that came to greet me when i entered (i realise that this post might be block by some search engines ; ) The hole was also home to a cuttlefish and some blue devils. NOt a bad site, but i wont be rushing back.
