Details: Another horror dive at Whites Beach. I don’t know what it is about this site, it always has atrocious visibility, and today was no different. It was also overcast so it made conditions very uncomfortable…and sharky feeling. Once i found my first Wobbegong though i started settling in. And there was 5 more to come during a short 40 minute dive.

Details: After the big rains and storms that swept through Geelong, i was interested to see how the Ocean was holding up. I was also keen to see more Wobbegongs. The vis was OK considering, better than days that weren’t proceeded with storms, but still not very good. Some larger sized particles in the water. I headed out the back in search of better Vis, but it wasn’t to be. There was also no Wobbegongs to be found…an exodus.

Details: Whites beach showed how hit and miss it can be with horrible vis and surge. There is something psychological about photographing wobbegongs in bad visibility…you just don’t feel safe. So after a couple of brief encounters, i headed out the back in hope of some cleaner water. I found large bommie that had a small entrance leading into a cave. I tentatively entered the small one man entrance and dropped down into the dark crevice that was only lit by the small sky light entrance and a distant glow in the distance where presumably another exit lay. I pushed further into the cave and in the distant glow, a monster appeared silhouetted in the backlight. It lept up and appeared to be attacking something. I got closer and saw the tenticles of a large moari octopus hanging out of its mouth. The large Gulf Wobbegong was thrashing the octopus around surging its head into the air and trying to devour the resisting octopus. I realised that i must have disturbed the octopus in its home and it made a dash for the rear entrance which the wobbegong was lying in wait at. It was a terrifying, yet amazing experience, and i had to be bold to hold my ground and get some photos as the beast trashed around the octopus only metres in front of me, with myself blocking its only forward exit. After snapping off a few shots, i backed out the small entrance and head to shore, buzzing with adrenaline.

Details: I explored out the back of the reef and spotted Gulf Wobbegongs in all sorts of positions on the reef. One got a little tired of my camera work, and did a aggressive movement towards me and then swum off to rest at another part of the reef. This site is not for the faint hearted. The wobbies can be menacing!

Details: A very unnerving dive at Whites Beach. The sky was densley overcast and humidity levels were high. The visibility was also extremely low, and conditions generally felt sharky. Sharky in a man-eater kid of way, rather than find a few Wobbegongs…which is why i came. However the prospect of coming across a camouflaged wobbegong by resting my arm or hand on one made it all the worse. I basically pysched myself out of this dive around 10 minutes in, but managed to put in a respectable 50 minutes once i found some nice ledges to chill out under.

Visibilty: 3m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 50minutes

Max Depth: 8m

Details: This was freaky dive. The sky was overcast and the water was hazy giving a very unnerving feeling in the water. It was one of those days that sharks love to ambush divers in the murky conditions ; ) This site is also a little scary when the vis is bad and the surge is up due to the number of Wobbegongs in the area. Their camouflage make them difficult to see and you could easily rest your knee or arm on them without realizing and get a nasty bite. I only saw one on this dive, but i was too wary to venture under the ledges. Somehow i still managed a 50 minute dive, even though i was going to call it 10 minutes in. Its still a great area.

Details: I’ve been tempted to try to find the Victoria Towers wreck for a long time, and today was the day to start the search. I headed out but didn’t find any signs of the wreck. The terrain was fantastic though, so failing to find the wreck wasn’t a big issue. At least i know where not to look next time.
