Details: Heading out from Barwon Heads, i felt like a bit of an explore and with the recent light plane crash off Collendina / Point Lonsdale, i thought it was best to stay away from that section of coast. Especially since one body was yet to be recovered…no one wants to see that! So off i went towards 13th Beach and Black Rock and sounded along the way. I decided on a piece of reef out from Black Rock that came up to 12m from a 20 metre base. On decent into blue warm-ish water, the vis quickly changed into a dirty green dropping to 17c in a significant thermocline at about 10m. The water movement was erratic and the fishlife seemed a little bit frenzied. I explored the overhangs with Blue Devils hanging around, a Sergeant Baker and a large Wobbegong shark tucked away under a fallen section of reef. An interesting sighting under a ledge was a Spinytail Leatherjacket??? A species i hadn’t seen before. Also around the top of the bommie was a Stars and Stripes Leatherjacket. The top of the bommie at 12metres and a nice section of yellow zooanthids that had the appearance of a horseshead with a kelp mane…hence the site got dubbed “Horsehead Reef”. This could be good site in better conditions.

Details: This was one of those magic days. The seas were flat and the water was the colour divers dream about, with light rays penetrating the water, hitting the bottom and dancing back through the surface in an allure on the ocean can put on. When we arrived at our dive site in about 23m, we could clearly see the bottom. The only thing clouding the visibility were the hundreds of salp and jellies that caught the light beams on their way down. The vis was so good, it actually detracted from this great dive site, it removed the cloudy mystery of the caves and cragged reefscapes. We spent more time around the top of the reef, firstly to appreciate the blue, and secondly to increase our bottom time. The forked tongue-like structure covered in zooanthids was the highlight of this dive. A structure i’d never noticed before here.

Details: This was a new site down off Ant Spit. It was a fairly ‘ungnarley’ block of reef in 20m. Under a small ledge i found a small bone…i have no idea what it is off. A Catshark made a brief appearance in the swaying kelp. This is probably not a site i’d rush back too.

Details: This dive was in the rough vicinity of Groper reef, but the batteries on my sounder weren’t working, so it was a matter of drop the anchor and see. Again this area turned up some surprises in the fish species seen. This time a Gunns Leatherjacket put in a show. A Sargent Baker allowed the closest approach i think i’ve ever managed with this species.

Details: Last time i visited this site in winter it was very quiet. So this time around i took Phil and Deb to see if the fish life had improved. It was much more productive with a couple of very inquisitive Dusky Morwong. It was generally a pretty dark dive though, but still a very nice dive.

Details: I hadn’t done an exploratory dive for a while, so i headed down Ant Spit way off 13th Beach to sounds up some sites. This site was a large squarish bommie with the leeward side fairly uninteresting. Down the side was a large overhand, and at the back was a terrific wall covered in zooanthids. It provided a good backdrop for a larger subject so it got named Backdrop Bommie. It seemed this area was the local hangout of a massive cuttlefish that came to check me out.

Details: Another cracker of a dive at Ant Caves. After descending we were surrounded by large numbers of fish…sweep, perch, leatherjackets… Close to the anchor position was a wobbegong shark under a ledge. The resident Blue Grouper put in another show but still no photos to prove it. It likes to keep its distance. Phil got a couple of ID shots though. On ascent the large schools of Barber Perch formed again beneath us.

Details: This was a short dive just out of the mouth of the Barwon River. The vis can usually get pretty bad here, but i made the best of the good conditions to check out the area.
