Dive Number: 579 09/05/2014 Wongarra, near Apollo Bay -Great Ocean Road

Conditions: Wintery

Visibilty: 12m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 60minutes

Max Depth: 11m

Details: Conditions were very wintery with cold northerlies, but the swell was flat..a rare thing down this neck of the woods. So off i went to shore dives some of the far west sites down near Apollo Bay. Wongarra looked the most interesting with the gully running down the middle of two reefs based on satellite imagery. The description matched the actually structure of the dive site. An easy beach entry into a gully that quickly dropped into about 8m. The gully was made up of barren boulders and then the reef tops either side were covered in lush bull kelp fields. NOt a lot of fishlife around, but one thing that struck me was the long back dorsal fin of an Old Wife that is much longer than i’ve seen on old wives around port phillip bay and the rest of the Vic/NSW. Perhaps this is a subspecies from the western parts of the continent???
