Dive Number: 415 08/12/2012 Collendina

Conditions: Lovely

Visibilty: 10m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 60minutes

Max Depth: 12m

Details: Great Dive..found an awesome little sea cave that was teeming with life. The highlight was a squid that i watched hunting. It had a lunge at a mado and then a small blue-throated wrasse. No luck on either front. Great to watch it change to a clear colouration to blend into the surface when above its prey, and then into a mottled maroon when it was below.

Dive Number: 414 07/12/2012 Kennett River

Conditions: Clear but surgey

Visibilty: 10m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 60minutes

Max Depth: 10m

Details: A narrow reef runs straight out to sea near the river outlet. Its covered in bull kelp and crayweed and some vegetation unique to this stretch of coast. I explored the outer wall as far out as i considered safe and got to about 10m, but the reef kept on going. i didn’t investigate the inner reef much as it was too surgey. A dive i’d like to try again when conditions are right.

Dive Number: 413 01/12/2012 Spring Creek, Torquay

Conditions: Looked Ok but Hellish

Visibilty: 5m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 20minutes

Max Depth: 4m

Details: I parked behind the surfclub and walked along spring creek to the beach. Conditions looked reasonable, but i soon found out it was far than good. The surge was relentless and rather than having a back and forward motion, it would surge and then curl through the many chunks of shallow reef. With poor visbility this was probably the most dangerous dive i’ve ever done. Luckily i returned unscathed, but i’m amazed i didn’t get smashed against the reef a bit more than i did. On the bright side, i found a nice little cluster of hydriods as a sheltered from the surge in a small overhang.

Dive Number: 411 30/11/2012 Bull Plateau, 13th Beach

Conditions: Lighting Storms, but dead calm water

Visibilty: 10m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 60minutes

Max Depth: 12m

Details: Lighting Storms flashed over the ocean, but the ocean remained eerily calm. This site is the first main carpark past the bluff, and is usually very swell affected being hit by the brunt of the SW swells, but not today. This is a tough walk with big stairs, but wow…cool dive. A shallowish plateau of reef covered in bull kelp and crayweed. Then reaching the back at the drop off turns into a ‘secret garden’ of wonderful sealife. This was an excillarting dive…diving 13th always seems to do that too me. Unfortunately my run of camera bad luck continued with a flat camera battery.

Conditions: A bit surgey, dirty and overcas.

Visibilty: 8m

Water Temp: ??c

Bottom Time: 50minutes

Max Depth: 8m

Details: I’ve been busting to try out some new sites along the Great Ocean road, so after wandering down along the coast, i decided on Cathedral Rock which ticked all the right boxes. Decent spot to park the car, nice stairway down to the beach/rock platform and also a lovely little beach cove entry/exit. I felt a bit vunerable exploring this site, but it was worth the effort and its on the todo list for another dive. The edge of the rock platform looked like the base of ancient ruins…particularly the stairway. All natural, but very evocative. Fishlife was fairly sparse, but some lovely vegetation.

Details: Shit weather again, so i thought i’d try a new spot near st leonards…just north of the pier. I saw a very tiny cryptic fish that i got very excited about. I think its just a baby stinkfish though…not all the exciting. Some hydriods out there, and a seemingly abundant over winter, featherstar floated by.
