Details: Heading out from Barwon Heads, i felt like a bit of an explore and with the recent light plane crash off Collendina / Point Lonsdale, i thought it was best to stay away from that section of coast. Especially since one body was yet to be recovered…no one wants to see that! So off i went towards 13th Beach and Black Rock and sounded along the way. I decided on a piece of reef out from Black Rock that came up to 12m from a 20 metre base. On decent into blue warm-ish water, the vis quickly changed into a dirty green dropping to 17c in a significant thermocline at about 10m. The water movement was erratic and the fishlife seemed a little bit frenzied. I explored the overhangs with Blue Devils hanging around, a Sergeant Baker and a large Wobbegong shark tucked away under a fallen section of reef. An interesting sighting under a ledge was a Spinytail Leatherjacket??? A species i hadn’t seen before. Also around the top of the bommie was a Stars and Stripes Leatherjacket. The top of the bommie at 12metres and a nice section of yellow zooanthids that had the appearance of a horseshead with a kelp mane…hence the site got dubbed “Horsehead Reef”. This could be good site in better conditions.
